Battle of the Primers #1: Rimmel Stay Matte.
So primer is something I've started using kind of recently and I think it's an important step especially for different foundations. I've also been trying out a lot of foundations recently and I realized hey... I have 4 primers and 4 foundations... I could do something with this... So I am. Different primers all work differently and different foundations work differently so this will probably be a helpful way to tell what works for what and who.
Now the primers I have are the Maybeline Babyskin, the Benefit Porefessional, the Too Faced Primed and Poreless... Which is a tiny baby sample that I'm not sure I'll be able to test out on everything, and the Rimmel Stay Matte.
The four foundations I have are the Olay Fresh Effects Bb Cream, the Rimmel Stay Matte, the Loreal true magic powder, and the Loreal true match Lumi. And I just got the Covergirl Ready Set Gorgeous so maybe I'll do that too!
To preface: I love all of these foundations, I've tried them for a while now and I think they can work with and without primer. The rimmel stay matte and the Loreal true magic I prefer to have a primer with because I have dry skin and those foundations are for more oily skin, but I still like a matte finish. I haven't tested all of these out at the time I'm writing this intro, but right now my favorite primer is the Rimmel Stay Matte and my favorite foundation is the Rimmel Stay Matte... But I don't like the two of them combined for me... So I'm not quite sure how this works lol. I think I'm actually going to do this series, so I'll talk about one primer per series if that makes sense. Now if you've found out by the title, I'll talk about the Rimmel Stay Matte because I've been reaching for that a lot more lately.
Combo #1 Rimmel Stay Matte and Olay Fresh Effects Bb Cream
Tested working, around the house, and out doing things
So I am surprised this combo worked so well so far. I know Bb Creams are supposed to contain a primer in them, but I feel like this is a more oily Bb Cream that doesn't stay on that well while out of the house or just in the heat. I've worn the Bb cream on its own to classes and stuff and it works fine, but in the summer a primer helps the staying power of it just a bit.
The Rimmel Primer is the best of the primers at making the product stay on your face. It gives the Bb cream a nice lasting power, but it doesn't take away from the luminosity and natural finish of the Bb Cream. Also I like the Bb Cream because it does feel so moisturizing, and I don't think this primer takes away from that, I just think that it makes the foundation stick just a little bit more. I thought this primer was going to make me feel dry when I first applied it, but it actually felt quite nice on the skin.
Combo #2 Stay matte primer with Loreal Truemagic liquid foundation
Tested: around the house, shopping in hot weather/in hot car and at work
Testing this out for the first time today... Not a huge fan of the combo tbh. It holds up nicely, but at the same time it looks like my pores are slightly exaggerated with this combo. I like the foundation, but it is probably my least favorite of the bunch, but it doesn't look amazing with this primer. I have tried it with both the Babyskin and the Porefessional and I liked it with both of those but it doesn't work well with this primer.
As far as it holding up it's doing a good job. I did just go to target in a hot car and I thought it could have melted off but it didn't. I also did buy the Ready Set Gorgeous powder foundation at Target, and I applied that to see if it made my skin look better and I think it did.
It actually looked nice after work too. I was running all around a fairly large store and still looked like I had a good coverage after work. This happens when I use it with the Bb cream also, but I felt it looked a little better wearing it with the Truemagic. Interesting.
I did feel like my skin felt weird after... I'm not sure how great of a cocktail that all mixes together, but it's an okay product overall.
Combo #3 Covergirl Ready Set Gorgeous
Tested while doing a floor set at work
I really really like this foundation and this combo didn't work badly at all, but I feel like other primers might make the foundation look a little better. This had the truest test of all: A Floor Set! I was running around the store, building shelves and doing all sorts of things for 7 hours I think and it stayed in tact pretty well. Really impressed with the lasting power of this, I really want to try this product with other foundations.
Combo #4 Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation
Tested out at dinner with my family
I think for someone with more oily skin, this combo might work amazingly well and look good on and last all day, on me it looked a little too cakey and I looked a little statue-esque. I think it lasted a while, but I've used this foundation with other primers and it looks way better. This wasn't the truest test either, but this isn't a combo I would want to wear to work or anything because it doesn't look natural. Probably just my skin type, but it's not my cup of tea.
Combo #5 L'Oreal True Match Lumi
Tested out at the movies and in a hot car
I love this foundation for a nice luminous look and I thought that this would be a great combo because the primer is dryer and it looks better with more luminous formulas. This is probably my
second least favorite combo though, because it did happen to cling to my dry patches and it didn't give me the luminous beautiful finish that this foundation gives me. I put some powder over it because I used the Icing blush... which was even MORE pigmented than I thought it would be and I looked like a clown. I didn't want to add the powder, but I actually thought it made it look a little better. It just made it look matte but not dry, it just had a nice finish to it that I really liked. Actually at the end of the day, I noticed a beautiful glow to my skin. It looked bad at first application, but this is something I would definitely try together again just because it did give off such a nice glow toward the end of the day, not oily just a nice glow to my cheeks. I may need to test this out again.... Not sure.
Overall I think if you have oily skin, this primer would be good for you and if you aren't so concerned with your pores showing up. I think for me it works best with the BB Cream and The Covergirl Foundation. It didn't look terrible with any of them, I could still go out looking the way I looked and not be embarrassed, but overall I don't think this worked for me. I think its incredible and it really makes your foundation stay. It makes me want to try some of Rimmel's other primers to see if they work better for my skin. Overall I still do really like this primer, but it really is not the best for my skin. It's worth checking out if you just need a primer to make foundation last longer and you're looking for a good drugstore foundation. Otherwise maybe one of the other primers I will be talking about will work for you. It isn't bad by any means, as I mentioned above I have been reaching for this quite a bit, but still not sure it will win the overall battle.
