Review: Tarte Greatest Glitz Set
So I wasn't really going to get any Holiday Sets this year... and then I saw EmilyNoel83's review on the new Tarte sets and decided I needed this one. So this is an Ulta exclusive, its $49 and it says its a $322 retail value... which idk about lol. I don't think I'd ever pay that much for a single makeup item... but whatever floats your boat. I used a $10 off birthday coupon with this, so that was cool and made it less expensive. I'm going to break this review down into different parts... so yeah.
Packaging
So part of the reason why I really wanted this was the adorable packaging. Its also quite functional also though. The three palettes come in the box and then there's a little drawer with a lipsurgence lip cream and a Light's Camera Lashes mascara. When you take out the insert that holds them though, you can really put a lot of stuff in there. So thats cute/
It comes in a nice box also. Very giftable, you can just slap a bow on it, and that's all you really have to do. Plus the box is super cute and sparkly and the three palettes that come inside are really nice and pretty too. There's a grayish blue package that has the smokey themed palette, the gold palette has the more typical gold neutrals in it, and the pink palette has the rosy colors in it. I think that's really helpful and its just a good concept to have the three different palettes like that.
The three palettes are also really well thought out because they have the coordinating blushes and you can get a full look out of each of the sets. I don't think you would need to pull any in from any other palette or any other ones of the palettes if you wanted to bring them to travel or anything. There are 8 shadows in each, which is a good amount and yeah. In Emily's review she said that you could travel with just one palette, but if you were to travel with all 3 palettes it wouldn't take up a lot of room because they are really sleek and nice. And you could interchange the blushes with any look. You could get a lot of looks just from one palette and it'd be good for a long vacation or a weekend away. Tarte has a ton of great travel palettes.
How Do They Wear?
They all wear pretty amazingly well. Thats one thing I love about Tarte palettes, they last all day and all night. If you were going out at night, you could totally do your makeup during the day and it would stay. You can do a lot of stuff too. When I went to New York to see Something Rotten I wore the Rose Gold Palette just with a cream eyeshadow as a base and it looked the same at the end of the day. The eyeshadows held up really well and the blush held up amazingly well also. And I did a lot that day. There was lots of walking, I reached like all my goals on my fitbit... lol. But yeah it was nice.
And I wasn't wearing it with a really long wearing foundation either. I had it with the Superstay Better Skin foundation from Maybelline, which lasts an okay amount on me... but it isn't that great compared to something like the L'oreal Infallible foundation. In the winter things stay on me a little better than in the summer.
And these would probably work fine without primer... but they work with every primer which is good. My Lorac shadows don't do great with a cream eyeshadow as a primer. My L'oreal La Palette's don't work with anything other than the UD primer potion or concealer and powder... so thats a good thing to note.
Pigmentation
I don't have a problem with pigmentation at all with these shadows either, which is great. The matte shadows are good... the one I had the most trouble with was in the silver palette. There's a color called Mint Sprig which is a really pretty unique green color... but it didn't really show up on my lid at all. That might be a fun inner corner highlight.
The Blushes are also really pigmented and they go so nicely with the eyeshadows they're paired with. The Neutral palette has a really bright pink that goes nicely with a neutral eye. It looks good with the pink Lipsurgence that they put in this also... which I really like.
There's kind of a mauve in with the rose gold and that looks really pretty with those colors. That one might be my favorite of the bunch. And then a really neutral but still sparkly one with the Smokey palette. I think that one looks a lot like Nars Orgasm and can sort of work as a bronzer too. Its a bronzy blush look and I like it. I think this might not wear as well as the others. This is what I'm wearing now and I can't really see it on me... it is a rainy day and it is a pretty neutral blush that's hard to find.
The Smokey Palette
I figure I'll go a little more in depth with the smokey palette because when I saw the other 2 palettes in it I was like "Neutral. Okay, I'll get tons of use out of that. Rose Gold. I love Rose golds, so I'll definitely wear that a lot. Smokey... hmm I don't tend to wear them a lot... maybe I shouldn't get this set."
And as I mentioned, I'm wearing that palette right now and I think this is the only one wear I've had a miss on pigmentation. Everything I swatched in the Gold Palette was super pigmented, everything in the rose gold swatched okay but showed up even better on the lid... but this one didn't swatch as amazingly and that one color just didn't do it for me on my lid... I don't really consider that a deal breaker. I got this for $10 off and I think it ended up being like 10x the points on this or something, just cause I had so many bonus points that I used all together... so that helps a little bit when I consider the value of it all.
And I think I'll still reach for this palette because I do like the blush in it a lot, and even though I'm not great with smokey eyes, this is a good way for me to step out of my comfort zone and try a few more. I did the look I'm wearing today fairly quick and I like it a lot. I also have a turquoise liner from Rimmel that I like pairing with silver shadows... so I know when I feel like using this blush or that liner, I'll probably just end up using these eyeshadows too because they are good and it is easy to do a smokey eye with it.
Bonus Items
I also love the lipsurgence cream it came with and the deluxe size of the Light's Camera Lashes. I think that's a great mascara and it works really well with a travel size. The Lipsurgence is a great color because it'll look good on anyone and go with any of these looks. Last year's set that I got came with a full size lipsurgence lip cream and a full size gloss... that might have been a better value overall... but it was $10 more expensive and I think I like this just as much anyway even without all the bonus items. So yeah.
Bottom Line
I love this set! I may even like it more than the set I got from them last year, I think its cutely packaged, great quality and super pigmented. It's probably worth the $49 because it comes with a ton of stuff that you will use a lot. If you want to treat yourself, this is a great way to do that. If you want to give it to a friend, I think they'd love it. You could even break it up and give 3 different friends a different palette or something like that, and just the individual palettes are good on their own. There are 8 shadows and a blush, so you could really do a lot of looks just with those. And they are great for travel too!
I'm happy I got this. And I think anyone that gets it will get a lot of use out of it and love it as well.
